Managing Back Pain in Older Adults

As we age, many of us find our health in decline. Many older adults even report an increase in pain as they age. In fact, researchers in the National Health and Aging Trends Study interviewed adults who were 65 years of age and older. The study found that over half of the participants reported overall prevalence of pain within the month prior to the study.

Along with a significant number of older adults reporting pain, older adults often have some common pain complaints, which include sacroiliitis and lower back pain. Therefore, receiving the proper pain management care is an important concern for these patients.

Radiofrequency Ablation for Older Adults’ Back Pain

Pain management doctors are concerned with using multiple different pharmaceutical drugs as a treatment option for older patients. This is because of the various interactions and side effects that can occur with such medications. Additionally, certain pain medications can exacerbate cognitive deficits and other health problems.

One of the most promising pain treatment option for elderly patients is radiofrequency ablation. Radiofrequency ablation involves using an electrical current that can interrupt pain signals. During this procedure, a doctor inserts a needle into the treatment area. A current is then passed through an electrode in the needle. This current heats the nearby nerve tissue, and this results in the blockage of pain signals.

After the procedure, the patient’s back pain should subside over a few weeks. Radiofrequency ablation is very effective, and the pain signals are usually blocked for a long time. Pain relief usually lasts 6-12 months. However, the results can last even longer. If the pain returns, the procedure can be repeated.
